Alain shakes his head. "I can't promise that," he says quietly. "I won't. I know too well what they face. Some of them are younger even than we were, and all of them have slimmer chances. I'd have one of them survive, at least, even if it means the Capitol finishes what was started at Jericho Hill." He closes his eyes, taking a long, deep breath of smoke. "I know your loyalties are split, between your District and the children of your world. I know what my winning could mean for District Seven. But if I win in this Arena, then I've failed. I won't throw away my life, but nor will I stand by and let them be slaughtered. It isn't in me. Never has been."
